Subject: Scriptures, Manuscripts, and Masonry-Metalwork: Buddhist Relics from the Lý and Trần Dynasties
Speaker / Affiliation: Phạm Văn Tuấn, Ph.D. / Hán-Nôm Institute, Hanoi.
The fourth and final lecture in our CBS Seminars on Vietnamese Buddhist Studies was successfully hosted via Zoom on the evening of June 10. Dr. Lee Kuei-Min gave the opening remarks and introduced Dr. Phạm Văn Tuấn of the Hán-Nôm Institute in Hanoi.
In his talk titled Scriptures, Manuscripts, and Masonry-Metalwork: Buddhist Relics from the Lý and Trần Dynasties, Dr. Phạm showed us unforgettable images of priceless statues, woodblocks, and stele rubbings from the Institute's holdings. Dr. Phạm expressed his view that to really understand Vietnamese Buddhism, one must thoroughly comprehend the history; to grasp the historical background, one must delve deeply into the available historical materials. Students and budding researchers at FGU and worldwide were especially encouraged to search out such rare documents and literatures and to pioneer their own niche domains.
Apart from the many participants based in Taiwan, several of the ~70 audience members included scholars from all across the world. CBS Executive Secretary Prof. Lin Hsinyi concluded the seminar series by thanking chief organizer Dr. Lee and all the lecturers for their illuminating lectures and discussions. On behalf of CBS Director Prof. Wan, she expressed the CBS's hope to assist in making valuable Vietnamese Buddhist Hán-Nôm documents readily accessible for future research.
We hope to continue our Seminars on Vietnamese Buddhist Studies again this Fall, so please stay tuned on our CBS website and social media for more information!
